“Mtoto Wa Nawiri”

While on a Drought Emergency Response Cash Transfer Post Distribution Monitoring in Belgesh, we met a divorced young woman by the name Yare Jattani. She has five children, and two of them are under five years. She invited us for a cup of tea at her hotel kiosk as she narrated to us her story. Last year, Yare gave birth to her last born child, and as per her culture, it is expected that a woman should stay for forty days indoors following birth. However, her case was different as she did not have enough food that would sustain her during the forty days’ period. As the only bread winner in her family, she had no otherwise but to go out and look for food that would sustain her young family. As she was up and about trying to make a living, lady luck spotted her, and the area chief approached her to inform her that an organization by the name Nawiri was looking forward to support vulnerable families with malnourished under 5 children, and hers would be one of those families. She was happy beyond words to receive the amazing news. The cash transfer program has changed her life in a positive way. She notes that, “being a single mother, I have been able to use the cash given to purchase food for my family, and also save part of it.” With a smile on her face, she added that she has been able to use her savings to start off a small hotel kiosk just outside her hut, that has now turned out to be her source of livelihood. She buys food stuff that she cooks in her kiosk, and on Saturday which is the area market day, she gets a lot of sales, with her main target being herders and traders. Currently, Yare is a happy woman as she can sustain the needs of her young family at ease from the income earned at her hotel kiosk. “I no longer beg for food from my neighbors and I feel proud of that”, she notes. With a hearty smile, she thanked the team that came up with the idea of cash transfer as it has changed her life and that of her children in a big way, and since her last child was born in the course of the cash transfer program, she nicknamed her “mtoto wa Nawiri”. After the cup of tea, we left the household impressed with the steps that yare has taken to ensure that her family’s source of income is secured even post cash transfer program.
