Cultivating Resilience: Small-Scale Farmers Embrace Sustainable Agriculture

Cultivating Resilience: Small-Scale Farmers Embrace Sustainable Agriculture

In collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), our project team has identified 132 small-scale farmer groups across Ngaremara, Chari, Sericho, Cherab, Garbatulla, and Oldonyiro wards, aiming to bolster local food security by equipping farmers with sustainable agricultural practices. With the November-December rains approaching, we’ve distributed fast-maturing seeds—including two varieties of beans, cowpeas, and green grams—to support immediate harvests for food and income.

To ease the physical demands of farming, each group received essential tools for land preparation, ensuring that the work of breaking ground and preparing for planting was manageable. Our dedicated Livelihoods team visited each farming space, offering practical guidance on efficient tilling methods and sharing best farming practices that will maximize crop yields. With each visit, our staff traversed challenging terrain and often endured long nights on rough roads. Their commitment to this journey reflects their belief that the project’s true harvest will be a community that embraces agriculture as a transformative way of life.

Each farmer group, composed of at least 15 dedicated members, also received training in kitchen gardening to diversify household food sources and improve nutrition. Additionally, each group includes specially trained Trainers of Trainers (T.O.Ts) who were given three varieties of fruit trees—mango, orange, and papaya—and specialized agricultural training. These T.O.Ts guide their groups in sustainable practices, empowering the community to adopt innovative and lasting approaches.

Each group was strategically positioned near significant water sources to facilitate irrigation if rains fall short, ensuring crops can thrive regardless of weather conditions. By adapting agriculture to their lifestyle, these groups not only enhance food security within their communities but also establish long-term resilience.

This project exemplifies our commitment to empowering communities through sustainable agricultural solutions. With each tool, seed, and lesson in farming practices, these communities become beacons of possibility, showcasing the viability of agriculture in challenging environments and offering hope for a future rooted in growth and self-reliance.
