Vulnerable households in Oldonyiro benefit from cash transfer.

It is on the 24th February, 2022, during the phase two cash transfer when Nawiri community mobilizer meets Lukas Lekishe, one of the unconditional cash transfer participants. As a pastoralist, we find him in his compound winding up cleaning the livestock shed as he prepares to go herding.

He narrates how as the breadwinner of his family, he has felt the effects of the drought that has ravaged through the region. The drought has greatly affected the health of the livestock, pasture has become inadequate and water for human and livestock consumption is a challenge too. Basic commodities like food are not readily available.

Lekishe is among the most vulnerable population that was slated to receive 5000 Kenyan shillings unconditional cash transfer for a period of four months. The joyous Lekishe notes that “the funds have really helped my family to purchase food, and the health of my children, one of them who was underweight has greatly improved due to a balanced diet. I am no longer relying on the sale of weak livestock, thanks for the support from Nawiri”.
